Library Director’s Notebook September, 2009 One of my favorite writers whom not too many people know about is Barbara Pym. Pym, a British writer who wrote primarily in the 50’s and 60’s, was once called by a well-known literary critic "one of the most under appreciated writers of the 20th century.“ Well, I’d like to add another name to that list of the under appreciated: Dorothy Whipple. I first heard about Dorothy Whipple while browsing through my favorite book catalog Bas BleuBas...

Library Director’s Notebook August, 2009 I just read a mouthful, or I should say a book with a mouthful of a title: The Guernsey Literary and Sweet Potato Peel Pie Society.  Written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, this novel might have fallen prey to the temptation to be as cute as its title. Instead, it soars into the exalted land of funny-but-serious-charming-but-believable-can’t-stop-reading-it-have-to-tell-everyone-about-it. In fact, this book has taken off...

Sometimes kids can get bored with “the same old same old” during the long summer break.  But not to worry! At the library we have museum passes that allow families to explore a wide range of outstanding museums and other educational and entertaining places, for free or greatly reduced admission. These wonderful and popular passes are paid for by the Friends of Barrington Library.  Check them out!

Those who love ROMANCE LITERATURE are in for a treat at the Barrington Public Library, where a Romance Display, and booklists, await your pleasure. The Romance Books Exhibit is located just inside the main doors of the Library.  Along with the titles on display, interested readers will find three helpful booklists: Humorous Romance, Contemporary Romance Novels and Romance Authors. Enjoy!

Check out this week’s Barrington Times (8/05) for a wonderful article about local children and recycled art.  Our children’s department staff helped kids get creative by offering thousands of colorful bits and pieces of recycled stuff that could be made into a wide variety of art work.  Who says going green has to be dull? Check out some of the delightful art projects in the children’s room!

A wonderful article in this week’s Barrington Times features two exceptional writing programs at Barrington Library: the play writing program and the flash fiction program.  Yes, the written word is alive, well, and worth noting at Barrington Public Library!

Director’s Notebook July, 2009 There’s a problem with dead authors.  They can’t write any more books. This is especially frustrating when you really love an author, as I, and countless millions love Jane Austen.  Unless someone discovers some previously unknown manuscript of Jane Austen’s (and what a literary sensation that would be!) we have to rely on modern day authors who use the popular literary device of “discovering” a novel or a diary or “finishing” one of Jane’s...

Has it been two months already since Ballet Prestige, Rhode Island’s Russian Style Ballet Studio, performed at Barrington Library? Not quite, since they were here on May 30, but in the interval since their spring program, they’ve had time to move their studio from Bristol to Barrington. The show was a great success. The dancers were fabulous, and almost every seat in the house was filled. I can’t quite give you the feeling of being in the audience on that Saturday afternoon, but the...
