directorsnotebook: Director’s notebook January, 2009 Hear the name Sherlock Holmes, and you think “world’s greatest detective”, right?  Hear the name Vidocq and you think… well, I don’t know what you think, but I didn’t have any immediate associations with the name.    ComicsJanuary 2009 Buyer Beware I eagerly snapped up Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel the moment that I saw it on the shelves in the Teen Room. I couldn’t remember where I saw a review of her 2006 graphic novel—I had, somewhere—but having pored through bunches of her Dykes to Watch Out For strips years back, I was excited to see what she could do with long-form cartooning. In Dykes to Watch Out For, Bechdel offers a warm, engaging and...

The life of this novel’s heroine — a first lady who comes to realize, at the height of the Iraq war, that she has compromised her youthful ideals — is conspicuously modeled on that of Laura Bush. ATMOSPHERIC DISTURBANCES. By Rivka Galchen. The psychiatrist-narrator of this brainy, whimsical...

MoviesDecember 2008 Art The Dark Knight is out on video and available—if you’re up for a bit of a wait—at your local library. But you probably don’t need me to tell you that just like you don’t need me to tell you about the film, either. After all, how many millions of people have paid nearly $1 billion worldwide to watch it, and how much press has Heath Ledger’s star turn as the Joker received, especially after his unfortunate death? No, chances are you know more about this movie...
