When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir is a powerful book by the two women (Patrisse Khan-Cullers and Asha Bandele) who created the Black Lives Matter hashtag that inspired the movement. BLM is more than just a hashtag. This memoir follows Patrisse Khan-Cullors, not from the moment the hashtag burst on the public consciousness, but from her childhood growing up black to her discovery of her queer identity, personal relationships, and how she got to where she is today. Patrisse seamlessly inserts social history and policy into her life story and she's ever aware of representation. Her memoir serves as an introduction into the fight for racial justice. Ultimately, it's a reflection on humanity. Her intersection of the personal stories and the BLM movement creates an urgent account that demonstrates her survival instinct, strength, and resilience. Her memoir also serves as a call to action. I highly recommend the audiobook, since it's read by Patrisse. She's quite captivating to listen to and you can certainly hear her passion in the way she speaks her words.
