Professor Joy Dennis returns to the Library this spring to give an exciting series of lecture, film, reading and discussion programs on the life and works of Kate Chopin. This notable Belle Epoch American writer is known for her ground-breaking feminist writing and the intimately revealing portraits she gives her readers of late 19th century southern society, particularily that of New Orleans and surrounding countryside in Louisiana. Joy will also offer information about other writers of the era during this course.Kate Chopin Course Schedule, Tuesdays from 10 AM to noon: April 15-Introduction to “Literature of the 1890’s” and discussion of the short story, “A Pair of Silk Stockings”.April 22-Discussion of the short story “Deseree’s Baby”April 29- Screening of the hour-long American Playhouse adaptation of the short story “The Story of an Hour”-film title: “The Joy that Kills”. May 6- Discussion of the film ”The Joy that Kills” and the short story on which it is based.May 13- Discussion of the short story “At the ‘Cadian Ball” and “The Storm: A Sequel to ‘At the ‘Cadian Ball’”.May 20- Discussion of the short novel The Awakening and course wrap-up. Copies of the course book, The Awakening and Selected Stories by Kate Chopin, will be available for $3 at the Reference Desk to registrants.
