Click on this link http://thephoenix.com/article_ektid61571.aspx to enjoy a Providence Phoenix article by Sharon Steel called “Steam Dream”.  Steel’s multi-faceted investigation of “steampunk” subculture includes a fascinating analysis about why this movement reaches back in time to claim a better future. She also describes how steampunk ethic is becoming a player in contemporary culture.  Steel contends that the movement was originally sparked by love of a particular type of science fiction; books by Victorian masters like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, as well as titles by contemporary writers like William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Specific books cited by Steel include Journey to the Center of the Earth and Voyages Extraordinare by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, and Sterling and Gibson’s The Difference Engine.  Alan Moore’s comic book The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen gets a mention as well.  For more steampunk titles, click on this web address http://www.librarything.com/tag/steampunk.  You’ll find these titles at the Library, either on site, or available via interlibrary loan through the Ocean State Libraries Network.
