Teddy, a rescued dog, comes upon two children, Nickel and Flora, lost in the woods during a blizzard. Their mother had gone for help after their car went off the road but when she fails
to return, the children venture into the storm. Teddy brings them to a secluded cabin he had shared with the Poet, Sylvan, who taught him about words. This knowledge enabled Teddy to speak, with the understanding that only poets and children would hear him.
