The Holdout by Graham Moore

Ten years ago, Maya Seale found herself in the middle of the controversial trial of Bobby Nock, an African American high school teacher accused of killing one of his students, fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar real estate fortune. Maya believed he was innocent and, one by one, persuades the rest of the jurors to return the verdict of not guilty, a decision that will change all their lives forever.

Now, a true-crime docuseries reassembles the jurors with particular focus on Maya, now a defense attorney herself. But when one of the jurors is found dead in her room, Maya must not only defend her decade-old decision, but also prove her own innocence. Was Maya wrong ten years ago? Or were her instincts about Bobby Nock right all along? And who is trying to frame her now?

The Holdout is a non-stop thriller that dives deep into the inner workings of a jury, including the motivations and experiences of each of the jurors in turn. Moore seeks to explore how juries are called to define and determine guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and what to do when there is doubt. ~ Reviewed by staff member Siobhan Egan
