Meet the Author - RI's Shellfish Heritage: An Ecological History

Meet the author Sarah Schumann to learn about her book Rhode Island's Shellfish Heritage: An Ecological History published by the University of Rhode Island in 2015.

The shellfish in Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island’s salt ponds have provided humans with sustenance for over 2,000 years. The book delves into the rich history of Rhode Island's iconic shellfishing heritage, offering a perspective of those who catch, grow, and sell shellfish, as well as of those who produce wampum, sculpture, and books with shellfish as their inspiration.

The idea for the book grew out of the 2014 RI Shellfish Management Plan, which was the first such plan created for the state under the auspices of the RI Department of Environmental Management and the RI Coastal Resources Management Council.

Sarah Schumann is the founder and board president of the nonprofit Eating with the Ecosystem and behind the project for Resilient Fisheries in RI.  Her work supports access and capacity building for young fishermen, integration of wild seafood into local food systems, and resilience of the socio-ecological fisheries system in the face of environmental uncertainty. She fell in love with fishing while teaching English in coastal Chile in 2000 and went on to earn her degree at URI in Marine Affairs. After college she got a job on a lobster boat and earned a Master's degree in Environmental Policy.  A razor clam harvester, she spends her summers in Alaska fishing for Bristol Bay salmon.

Her work on the book received the 2015 Rhode Island Council for the Humanities "Innovation in the Humanities Award."
