Genealogy 101: A 3-Session Course

This three-session course targets beginners who wonder how to get started researching their families; those who began their search and need guidance to continue; or those who want a refresher class. Taught by genealogist, Anne Wagner.

The class meets on three consecutive Thursdays. April 26, May 3, and May 10 from 10 am to 12 pm.

Session 1 - Starting Your Research
A lecture on the basics of genealogy research and vital records, conventions for recording information and how to organize and store your findings along with how to complete a pedigree chart and family group sheets.

Session 2 - Using Research Sources
Tour the library's Reference Department and learn what the library has to offer through online databases, local history books, newspaper archives, maps, reference books, and of course, the librarian. Etiquette and how to pose a research question will be covered along with an introduction to Ancestry.com.

Session 3 - Your Research Plan
Set a simple goal and write a simple reserach plan. Census records and directories will also be covered along with any final questions.
