Part of librarian Doug Swiszcz's SPENCER TRACY film lecture series, with pre-film commentary.
Tracy won the first of two back-to-back Best Actor Academy Awards for his performance in this adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of a rich, spoiled boy (Freddie Bartholomew) who learns important life lessons when he is taken aboard a New England fishing vessel about to embark on a months-long voyage plying the North Atlantic for its catch. Tracy plays Manuel, the Portuguese fisherman who befriends him and becomes a kind of mentor to him. Directed by Victor Fleming, the supporting cast includes Lionel Barrymore, Mickey Rooney, Melvyn Douglas, and John Carradine.
