Film Lecture Series: Bad Day at Black Rock

Not Rated (1955) 1 hour and 21 minutes  Color

Part of librarian Doug Swiszcz's SPENCER TRACY film lecture series, with pre-film commentary.

Tracy plays John J. Macreedy, a one-armed veteran of World War II who arrives by train in a small desert town in search of the family of a fellow soldier. Once there, the mysterious, tight-lipped residents make it clear that he is unwelcome. What accounts for this lack of hospitality? What secret are the townspeople trying to hide? Will Macreedy get out of the town alive? The stellar supporting cast includes Robert Ryan, Walter Brennan, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and Anne Francis. Here's a taut thriller directed by John Sturges, who also helmed The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape.

Free and open to all.
