It has been a long journey, but Barrington Public Library has finally gone fine free!
What this means for you:
- There will be no overdue or late fees on all items borrowed from and returned to Barrington Public Library.
- Barrington Public Library will no longer collect money to pay overdue or late fees.
- Lost or damaged item replacement charges will still apply.
Our goal at Barrington Public Library is to provide equitable service to all residents and remove barriers to access library materials and services. Eliminating fines helps bring us one step closer to this goal.
Research has shown that charging overdue and late fees does not incentivize patrons into returning items on time but rather acts as a deterrent to potential library users particularly low-income patrons, teens, and those with young children. Additionally, overdue fines disproportionately impact patrons with lower incomes and can contribute to a cycle of economic hardship.
For these reasons, more and many libraries around the country are eliminating fines. Barrington Public Library is proud to be a new member of fine free libraries.
