Virtual Two-Part Film Workshop with Andrew Gerstenblatt - Making a Short Film

How To Make A Movie During A Pandemic - Yes, it can be done. Filmmaking is all about innovation; the art and science of motion pictures has evolved in a way no other medium has. First, we started in black and white. Then, we added sound. Then, we added color. Later on, we developed visual effects, green screens, and motion capture. Now, we are tasked with making films while no longer in the same location. To be a filmmaker is to be able to adapt to new circumstances. So…how do we even begin to take on such a feat? I’m glad you asked. In this two part Zoom class, we will walk through the steps of making a movie using nothing but what you already have: cell phones, pencils, paper, family members, pets, and anything else in your home you can use to tell a story. Students will be tasked with making a film that is 90 seconds or less using any “equipment,” “props,” and “actors” you already have around you. Students will have the option of making a 90 second short film (live action, stop motion, narrative fiction, or documentary) or creating a movie trailer using iMovie. I will also be doing the same project. In the first class, we'll talk about getting your movie ready. Over the week, you'll shoot the project on your own, or with family/friends. In the second class, we'll watch what you made and discuss the project. So, if you like movies and don’t know how to make one during this time, this is the class for you. Be creative, and have fun. That’s what the movies are all about.
